From Dr. Michael Klaper, Moving Medicine Forward
March 2020

With the COVID-19 pandemic, Moving Medicine Forward’s mission to educate doctors about the critical role nutrition plays in immune system function and overall health is more imperative than ever.... After the pandemic passes, we will still be faced with most of our physicians knowing next to nothing about nutrition.

Moving Medicine Forward

As for the feared “underlying conditions” that increase mortality rates, the COVID-19 infections are most deadly in people who are obese, diabetic and suffering from cardiovascular disease — all diseases that can be prevented, and even reversed, through whole-food, plant-based nutrition! In view of the likelihood of repeated waves of COVID-19 infections in the future, this knowledge is ever more valuable for practicing physicians to have.

Although the virus has temporarily grounded my in-person medical school lectures, we are poised to resume as soon as the pandemic subsides. Here are some of the medical schools at which lectures were planned and which will be visited as soon as gatherings are permitted:

  • University of Texas Medical Branch, Galveston, TX
  • Baylor University Medical School, Houston, TX
  • University of North Texas, Ft. Worth, TX
  • University of Arkansas, Little Rock, AR
  • University of Massachusetts, Amherst, MA
  • Quinnipiac University, Hamden, CT
  • Rutgers University, New Brunswick, NJ
  • Brown University School of Medicine, Providence, RI
  • Wesleyan University, Middletown, CT

In the meantime, the Moving Medicine Forward Initiative is continuing to advance.

After the pandemic passes, we will still be faced with most of our physicians knowing next to nothing about nutrition. So, we are taking this opportunity to put more emphasis on advancing the Nutrition Interest Group program of MMF.

Each month, using a nation-wide video-conferencing platform, nutritionally-interested medical students, physicians and allied health professionals will engage with me in a lively exploration of nutrition-based subjects through case discussions, directed readings and guest lectures by nutrition authorities. Announcements and invitations to participate in the spring 2020 case discussion will be sent in late April/early May.

In this way, MMF is continuing to build a community of nutritionally-aware practitioners and clinicians who will place their patient’s diet in the prominent position it deserves when it comes to diagnosis and treatment of chronic disease.

For all donors, new and existing, we thank you for your ongoing support and for helping us reach our goal of making applied, plant-based nutrition part of the curriculum taught in every medical school in North America. Together, we can change the landscape of health in America and throughout the western world! Go to the website to donate. Thank you!
