California Dog Blood Banks CLOSED

From Beagle Freedom Project
March 2024

California was the ONLY state that actually required that dogs and cats be held captive in closed colonies (meaning, in labs), for their blood rather than allow a volunteer, humane system, of donating blood.

Hemopoet

We did it! We CLOSED dog slave blood banks in California!

You might remember our blood bank bill "Lennon's Law" aka AB 1282. We fought hard for two sessions to close a disgusting facility in Garden Grove, California called Hemopet that bought Greyhounds after they were used on the racetrack, then they held them captive in cages and took their blood for years, making them sick.

As it was, California was the ONLY state that actually required that dogs and cats be held captive in closed colonies (meaning, in labs), for their blood rather than allow a volunteer, humane system, of donating blood, but we changed that! Our bill passed in 2021, but with a 3-year phase out because the Veterinarian's association was too scared to make changes, but on MARCH 15, 2024, just a few days ago, HEMOPET CLOSED!!!! No more dogs will suffer for their blood!

Thank you to all who supported this bill, especially to the die-hard Greyhound groups and the authors of the bill, Assemblymembers Bloom and Waldron, we will never forget you!
