Letter from Judy McFarland Concerning a Vegan Lifestyle and Biblical Intent - 13 Mar 2004

Good morning..

My name is Judy McFarland and I live in Victoria BC Canada; I turned to the vegan lifestyle over a year ago and am very committed to it. I am also a Christian, but find it very difficult to convince my husband, family and Church family that God did not intend for us to consume animals; they refer back to the slaying of the lamb as sacrifice and other similar references. How do I respond to this? I need a lot of help in this area. Can you point me in the right direction and give me some guidance?

Thanking you in advance and God bless.

Dear Judy:

Thank you for your email.

We will do our best to give you some basics.

Remember that people will always try to excuse away anything in their lifestyle, that they don't want to give up, and that is based upon worldly living, as is the killing and eating of animals.

We need to look at God's intent at creation, which was a plant food diet. There also wasn't any death until after the Fall. We know that there is no death in heaven (Revelation 21:4). In Isaiah 11:6-9 we are given a glimpse into the Peaceable Kingdom. Jesus tells us that peacemakers are blessed and are children of God (Matthew 5:9), and Paul picks up on this and says that the whole of creation is waiting for the revealing of the children of God to free it from its corrupted state. Furthermore, Jesus tells us to pray for our Father’s heavenly will to be done on earth as it is in heaven.

These all point to our living as you believe we should. We hope this helps. There's also a lot more material on our web site.

In the Love of the Lord,

Frank
