Letter from Christopher Hoyt Concerning Christian Meat-eating - 6 May 2004
Subject: "If we REALLY want God to bless America and the earth, GO VEGAN!"??
If you were REALLY Christian, you would know from the Scriptures that God does NOT oppose eating the flesh of animals. In the Old Testament, when animals were offered as atoning sacrifices, the (cooked) meat was eaten after the blood was shed for the remission of sins. In the New Testament (specifically, Acts chapter 11) God makes it clear that "four-footed animals of the earth, wild beasts, creeping things, and birds of the air" may be eaten, as He tells Peter, "Rise, Peter; kill and eat." You might want to read ALL the Bible, not just one or two isolated verses that support your doctrine. One of the sure signs of a cult is taking a portion of Scripture and making it conform to your lifestyle. True Christianity is taking our lifestyle and making it conform to the Scripture. Sorry to be harsh, but it troubles me when people take Scripture out of context to justify their beliefs.

Dear Christopher:
Thank you for your letter.
God may not consider the eating of meat as a sin, but it is neither His creation intent nor His heavenly will. It is only a concession because of the hardness of the human heart.
However, the mistreatment of animals in the production of food is an abomination before the Lord, and since the vast majority of animal products sold today come with a tremendous amount of pain and suffering, the purchasing and eating of such products condones the sin.
Think about the blessings of the beatitudes. How can we receive these blessings and continue to treat animals the way they are in factory farms and slaughterhouses. The simple answer is: we can't!
In the Love of the Lord,
Frank
