Letter from Otto about the Suffering of Animals and Human Indifference - 8 Jun 2007
I looked at your website with great shock and disappointment at our government, but not really surprised. Nothing matters to them and business men who run these things only for money.
I really feel helpless, if I stop eating meat and do the things that I know that I should do, will it make a difference?
I remember telling a story to one of my relatives some years ago, it was about a wild life programme that I had watch on t.v, the story was about an Elephant and her Calf living in a desert part of world, little or no water and very tough for them to survive, the calf followed her mother round for weeks without water or food until she finally died, my relative thought it was rather amusing as he could see that I was pretty upset and wished that I had not watched the programme. This is typical of a lot of people when one mentions the welfare of animals.
If I were to give up eating meat as I feel that I should I know that it would not make one bit of difference to the plight of animals. It will always go on and cannot be stopped, I have been brought up from childhood purchasing meat in a packet and have known nothing about the slaughter of animals until the later years in my life (now 59), for sometime I have felt guilty for eating meat, thinking about it as someone said to me, if we didn't eat them they would be eating us, any wildlife programs that we watch always show them killing each other for food and often not in a very compassionate manner, it really is a cruel world.
I hate myself, this world, the terrible happenings to our fellow creatures and to ourselves. However, this is the world that we are born into and must cope with it. Thank God that some people are fighting for animal welfare and with some success although in many countries animal cruelty continues.
Evil is probably one word for the people that carry out such cruel acts on animals, the ones that are encasing pigs and other poor creatures in cages of torture for profit are in my mind something missing in between their ears, surely we cannot call these people human beings, the only true statement I ever heard from an M.P was, There are beasts roaming amongst us posing as human beings. It is up to us as human beings to show compassion and kindness to all animals. How I hate this world.
A very distressed person after looking at your website.

Dear Otto:
Thank you very much for writing and for expressing your feelings. There are a lot of people who feel the same way and ask the same questions.
As for stopping the eating of animal products: it does make a difference, particularly if you let others know about why you have made your choice, and yes, some people will still make fun, but others will think about it, and some will make changes. Just this past week there was a news article about the decline in the slaughter of animals in Britain because more and more people are going vegetarian/vegan.
We have a great recipe section: www.all-creatures.org/recipes.html

We look forward to hearing from you again.
