DURING Pope Benedict's visit it was reported that pilgrims "revelled at massive barbecues thrown by the church." How many innocent and inoffensive animals were violently slaughtered for these barbecues and why does the Catholic Church continue to ignore the needless suffering of farmed animals?
Many animals killed would have been cruelly reared in grim factory farms and so severely confined they could barely move.
Many would have been agonisingly mutilated without painkillers.
In third world countries millions of humans are starving to death because of lack of food, yet almost half of the world's grain is being squandered to fatten farmed animals in the West.
If the Pope had encouraged a vegan diet he could have helped alleviate the suffering of millions of non-humans and humans alike.
JENNY MOXHAM,
Monbulk
