Letter from Ina About Going Veg, Our Recipes, Vegi Cats and Dogs - 12 Sep 2009

Hi Mary & Frank,

Just discovered your website recently, I can't stop browse through your recipes page again and again!! I've been vegan for almost 12 years for ethical reason. And I can tell you that it wasn't easy at first being vegan in Indonesia, since information was quite rare and vegetarian issues were alien-like due to tradition/culture and religion teachings [around 90 % of the citizens are Muslims].

There are many ingredients that are hard to find in my town, Yogyakarta, but yea I guess I just have to be creative. But I'm dying to get nutritional yeast!! Still don't  where to get them yet.

I am in the middle of migrating my dogs into vegetarian diets, and it's still an experimental moment for me. Some friends consider me crazy, but I fortunately always have logical answers. I did some research first but the dogs are still craving for meaty stuffs after several days of vegetarian diet had been going on. I'm still looking for the right, easy-to-cook and enjoyable food for the dogs, but still in a trial-and-error step these first few weeks. My partner, who have been vegan for two years is supporting me, but still sometimes he asks whether we should put some meat in the meal, when the dogs refuse my cooking, or just eat little amount of it.

Well, just wanted to drop by and say hi, and give you a thumbs up!! I have suggested my parents and brother to check out your website, they are religious Catholic, but they are not at all vegetarian although my brother and dad have been encouraged by the doctor to cut down on animal protein consumption due to their high cholesterol levels and blood pressure. I hope your website will open their eyes.

Thank you very much for your very encouraging letter, and for telling us about your vegan journey.

We added some vegi-dog and vegi-cat supplements to their food. If you look in our dog and cat vegan pet food article section, you will see some suggestions that might help, and a link to Harbingers who sell the supplements.

The nutritional yeast we buy is from a division of Red Star. You might want to look them up on the internet for their international suppliers and dealers.
