We say that dogs are "man's best friend" but how much of a friend are we to them?
(Keep pets safe during Halloween fireworks, 30/10)
It's surely a sad indictment on our society that at every opportunity - Halloween, Guy Fawkes night etc. - we deliberately terrify them by exploding fireworks.
We are well aware that all animals are terrified by thunder and fireworks. We can't stop the thunder but we can stop the fireworks - and we should.
Apart from the needless suffering they cause animals, fireworks also pollute our environment. The toxic compounds in them can harm our own health and the ear splitting explosions can cause hearing loss and tinnitus. Surely it's time to say no to fireworks .
