Letter from Jenny Moxham to the Editor: Hard Times for Pigs and Turkeys - 22 Dec 2010

Dominion Post
22nd December 2010

It's certainly been a hideously cruel two weeks for animals (Tough measures needed for those who are cruel to animals, 18/12) but then Christmas always is a hideously cruel time for them. I'm referring not to dogs and cats but to turkeys and piglets.

Ironically, at this time of Peace and Goodwill on Earth, more of these inoffensive animals are mercilessly butchered than at any other time of the year. We rightly recognize it as cruelty when someone cuts off a puppy's ears with scissors yet, if we buy turkey or ham we are, in fact, cutting off a turkey's toes and beak or cutting off a piglet's tail and testicles.

By handing over our consumer dollars we are paying someone to carry out this abuse on our behalf. Isn't it time to say no to all cruelty by adopting a humane and healthy animal-free diet?
