I was pleased to see Rev Jeremy Graves (Give thanks for the joy of animals, 4/10) pointing out that the Feast of Saint Francis - World Animal Day - is a time to remember all animals, not just companion animals.

Whilst many churches hold blessing services for "pet"animals, very few - if any -draw attention to the tragic plight of the millions of "farmed" animals who are surely far more in need of Gods blessing than our pampered pets.

Severely confined inside barren cages and pens, factory farmed animals never know a moment of joy in their entire life time. In addition to this they are forced to endure agonizing mutilations and are cruelly deprived of everything normal and natural in life including fresh air and space to exercise. Like all farmed animals they die a brutal and terrifying death.

Please take a look at http://www.aussiefarms.org.au/

Incredibly, numerous churches not only ignore the suffering of farmed animals but actually contribute to it by concluding their blessing service with a sausage sizzle.

Given that this week is Be Kind to Animals Week why not vow to be kind to animals from now on by refusing to eat them.
