"I'm not vegan but I love animals"

From Sandra Higgins, Eden Farmed Animal Sanctuary, Ireland

Recognising that animals have rights has nothing to do with loving them.

How often have you heard that phrase? People use their 'love' of other animals as a way of justifying their non-veganism, as if having a benign view of other animals entitles them to keep using them, and paying for them to be killed.

What they are referring to is usually the love of companion animals and perhaps a vague notion that all the animals we use, as food, clothing, in research, entertainment and labour, are somehow 'cute'.

But recognising that they have rights has nothing to do with loving them.

It involves acknowledging that they have feelings and that their lives have value to them. Only then do we realise that we need to stop using them as if they are our resources.
