February 2022

Please can you look at the beautiful cows and sheep Lonia and I bore witness to today. I promised them they would be seen, and that we wouldn't forget them.

Cow slaughterhouse

Slaughterhouse Vigil, AFFCO Castlecliff, Whanganui, NZ, 27 February 2022:

A cow is pregnant for around 285 days, similar to a woman. Her baby goes through the same mammalian stages of zygote, blastocyte, embryo and foetus a human baby goes through. (I knew studying Zoology at Uni would come in handy one day!).

At around Day 200 trillions of hair follicles began to form on their body, and it’s their skin’s unique markings, and their untold number of hairs, that struck me for the umpteenth time again today.

They are such large animals! They have so many hairs, each and every one visible when you are up close. In fact their bodies are so complete and complicated that it took a full nine months for Nature to lay everything laid down correctly.

Yet two or three years after their birth, sometimes less – days in the case of bobby calves - we dispose of them, like rubbish in a landfill.

Why on Earth aren’t we in awe of cows? Why don't we love and respect them? Why, instead, do we hold a gun to their head and slit their throats - in their hundreds daily at this one slaughterhouse alone? Rhetorical question, I don't want an answer.
