“When we arrived, we saw a lot of blood. Pigs were screaming and begging for help, while the ranch workers were killing and dismembering them, in front of the authorities who did nothing. We begged the police to stop the killing, but they did not help at all. They prefer that farm workers killed the animals rather than release them to a sanctuary.”
On Sunday 14th August 2022, a truck transporting around 200 pigs to
their slaughter crashed on the Acatepec Freeway outside Mexico City.
The first vegan activists arrived at the scene around 7 PM, trying
to rescue the survivors.

Around 50 activists from several animal protection groups arrived at the scene with vehicles, and worked together to save some of the survivors, despite the disapproval of the authorities present. A sanctuary called Seres Libres agreed to give shelter to 16 of the pigs, so they were taken there.
So far, 15 are still alive at the sanctuary, which wrote the following in an Instagram post on the 19th of August:
“Each little pig has been checked, at this time they are undergoing treatment because the stress of the accident diminished their immunity. We ask for a medical report for everyone to see. There is another report that we cannot make public for legal reasons to help the pigs. The vets left us some recommendations, which are being applied. In general, they are fine, with some bruises, but with medication, they will improve. They continue to be monitored until they will be discharged.”
CDM MX Animalsave stated in their post that
“It is so sad to know
that this incident was the only way out for 16 individuals, but for
now we will keep up the fight until no animal ever has to go through
such a tragedy to find their freedom.”
