The Reality of Rabbit Farms in Spain

From Aïda Gascón Bosch, Anima Naturalis
May 2022

Of the 4,500 existing rabbit farms in the EU, 3,800 are in Spain where in 2021, 38.5 million rabbits went to the slaughterhouse. Rabbits are weaned at 32 days and sent to the slaughterhouse a month later. There is no specific regulation that considers the welfare of these animals.

Undercover video here. It is eerily quiet...

Our work forces us to witness the greatest horrors that animals suffer. This is what the meat industry wants to hide.

Spain is the country that sends the most rabbits to the slaughterhouse, where the largest number of farms in the entire European Union is concentrated and where there is no specific regulation that considers the welfare of these animals. In short: there is no other place where so many rabbits suffer with this intensity in the entire continent.

The rabbits are kept in small wire cages, with no more space than the equivalent of a sheet of paper. They cannot feel sunlight, jump, run, or smell scents from the environment, as they would in nature. Corpses pile up on these farms. Of all those born in these conditions, one in five will die before being taken to the slaughterhouse.

We believe that only by witnessing this reality can we push for real laws that protect animals and educate a population that is progressively abandoning the consumption habits that finance this business.

We are the ones who entered the night of the farms to bring to light the stories of these anonymous victims. Please help us make this hidden reality visible and be part of this cause for the dignity of all animals. Visit their website if you want to support the work of Anima Naturalis.
