slaughterhouse gas chamber

DxE investigator Raven Deerbrook has obtained never-before-seen footage from inside the Marel Butina gas chambers used by Smithfield Foods. She went undercover at Smithfield’s Farmer John in Vernon, CA, where she descended 26 feet into the pit of the deadly chamber and installed hidden cameras to show the world what happens inside these secretive machines.

She discovered that the USDA isn’t monitoring the chambers, where animals are hidden for up to 4 minutes while they are brutally suffocated and killed in carbon dioxide gas. Wired Magazine just published an in-depth article about the investigation and how this footage disproves the slaughter industry’s lies.

And please share this breaking investigation on Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter.

The hidden camera footage that Raven obtained shows pigs screaming, gasping, thrashing violently and trying to escape as they descend into the pit of CO2 gas. Veterinarians and legal experts have reviewed the footage and concluded that these devices violate federal law, specifically Title 9 CFR § 313.5 (a)(1) which states that carbon dioxide gas can only be used if it accomplishes “anesthesia quickly and calmly, with a minimum of excitement and discomfort to the animals.”

But the USDA disagrees. USDA leaders have reviewed this footage as well and decided that it does not violate the law, since language like “quickly” and “minimum of excitement” is up to them to interpret. A top USDA official responded to our report saying that slaughter is messy, bloody, and unpleasant.

To learn more about this issue and join us in asking the USDA to put a stop to this cruelty, visit StopGasChambers.org. The Farmer John slaughterhouse is closing permanently next month, partly due to pressure from activists. We can’t slow down now. We have to keep the pressure on to make sure this facility is never again used to torture animals or exploit workers.

And we must keep bringing hidden cruelty to light until every slaughterhouse closes and our laws protect living beings instead of the industries that exploit them.
