Waiting for the push back

The activity known as ‘farming’, is a business; it exists to make money, wields breath-taking political and financial influence and shamelessly advertises fantasy worlds of bucolic pastures and blissful animals. Its continued existence relies on duping the public about the atrocities it perpetrates on its victims.

Although I didn't watch it as I've no TV license, recently the BBC showed a programme about the dairy industry that appears to have generated quite a shocked response, with many consumers saying they will never touch ‘dairy’ products again. However, there will undoubtedly be a massive push back from the industry and I expect we’ll see all the tired old justifications being trotted out. I could fill the rest of this page with a list but that’s not what this post is about. I’ve already written reams about the subject that can be found here and at Learning Lessons.

This is a plea to common sense. In any business situation, those who push back do so because they are trying to SELL something. Every single one of us knows that the business that wants your money is NEVER going to be honest with you about what they’re selling or the lengths they will go to, to convince you that you need to buy it. They will ALWAYS gloss over the things they don’t want you to think about.

The use of sentient individuals for 'dairy', 'meat', eggs, and other body parts, is not some community-spirited labour of love. The activity known as ‘farming’, is a business; it exists to make money, wields breath-taking political and financial influence and shamelessly advertises fantasy worlds of bucolic pastures and blissful animals. Its continued existence relies on duping the public about the atrocities it perpetrates on its victims. It also relies upon the denial of environmental and health related science. Despite this, at its heart it is driven by consumer demand as all supply businesses are.

We all like to think of ourselves as decent people who protect the innocent, defend the defenceless and take a stand against injustice. However, when we’re not vegan, we do the exact opposite. We pay others to perpetrate the most sickening depravities on our behalf.

It’s really that simple; only by being vegan can we become the people we actually think we are already. So, start with the person you see each day in the mirror and be vegan. Our next task will lie in using our power as voters to end the industry stranglehold on subsidies from the public purse before it’s too late for the planet as well as for our victims.

But whatever you do, don’t fall for the hype of those who want your cash.
