Poems of compassion dedicated to the non-human animals who share this planet
with us and the people who fight for them.
In the center of fanfare
stands the newly born
elephant calf
working to stay upright
with the help of females
(losing control
of bodies in celebrating)
and mother’s rumble
of trunk lending support
for new life, savanna
now in Rhodes
and red oat grass
under tropical
acacia tree canopy
appearing blown away
by trumpetings
over plain
of elephant herd
flappings of ears
raising of tails
turning themselves
into guardian
spinner of dreams —
givers and keepers—
roarings, elephant love.
