[Written following a vigil at Vernon CA Farmer John Pig Slaughterhouse, March 2020]
You’ve given into sleep.
Companions by your sides as pillows and warmth to combat the cold steel
beneath
We stand silent so we don’t wake you
You’ve traveled so far.
The Scratches we see on your bodies will leave our souls with scars
Your battle is almost over but ours has just begun
Keep sleeping sweet babies
It’s almost over . It’s almost done
Feel at peace and
Dream of sun
Dream of what your life should be like
With room to play and run
Dream of food and belly rubs
kisses, soft voices and gentle hugs
Soon no one else will hurt you
Soon it will be light
Soon it will be over
You don’t have to fight
What we have left will stay out here
Feeling all of your suffering while we hold back our tears
We will make sure your life mattered
We will make sure they know
We will bring into the light what they don’t want us to show
We will do this for you, for it’s all we can do
We know your life matters, we know it belongs to you
So keep sleeping sweet angels
And Until this fight is won,
Try and Be calm babies
It’s almost over
It’s almost done
