I'm nobody's mother
No grandchild on my knee
I'm nobody's sweetheart
No one looks out for me.
And yet my backyard birdies
Flock around my door
They're waiting for the food I share
And then they ask for more!
The sparrows know my footstep
The blackbird knows my voice
The little cat next door drops by
I see him and rejoice!
The chickens they come running
Demanding what is due -
No one’s ever loved me
As loudly as they do!
I've bottle-fed a bobby calf
Who didn’t have a name
He blinked at me with grateful trust
And somehow I felt claimed.
Many I've held who didn't stay
Their lives I couldn’t save
But even brief love leaves behind
Memories that remain.
So let me not be small and sad
the love I have has not gone bad
It only widened, deep and free
For all the beings who need me.
