Xena had obviously fallen out of the top of the pallet when the forklift took them off the truck. She had landed between crates and was stuck there hanging for almost 9 hours before my friend found and rescued her.

Xena Chicken

Xena was found with her leg caught between two extremely heavy transport crates filled with hens waiting to be slaughtered at Star Poultry abattoir in 2016. She had obviously fallen out of the top of the pallet when the forklift took them off the truck. She had landed between crates and was stuck there hanging.

She was hanging there for roughly 9 hours before my friend found her. It took a huge effort for those two friends to move the two incredibly heavy steel bars that were holding up crates of chickens. It took them a while, but they finally got her out. She was rushed home and given emergency critical care.

Xena visited the Burwood Bird Vet the next day and x-rays showed that she had a leg that was broken in several places and damage to her spine.

Xena spent a long recovery in the care of a rescuer and then came to live at Lefty's Place. She always walked with a pronounced limp and her leg had set at an angle so she looked even stranger when she walked.

Xena left the world a few years after rescue due to reproductive cancers, but her life at Lefty's Place Farm Sanctuary was everything a chicken could want. She was truly cherised during her time here. Xena was strong, brave, sweet, intuitive, smart, intelligent and so incredibly resilient. I miss her and think of her often.
