With the coronavirus pandemic spreading across the globe, we are living in a moment of great fear and uncertainty. But, I am writing today with some happy news: Born Free USA has rescued five monkeys from a roadside zoo and is giving them a lifetime home at our primate sanctuary!

The beginning of these animals' lives was a horror story. Conditions facing the animals at the Cricket Hollow Zoo in Iowa, a roadside zoo with a long and troubling history of animal abuse, were truly deplorable...

  • Filthy, tiny cages littered with rotten food, feces, and dirty standing water.
  • Animals trapped in cages with the decomposing bodies of others.
  • A baboon so hurt and frustrated by being separated from his mother that he died from repeatedly banging his head against his enclosure wall.

The animals at Cricket Hollow faced these and other untold torments, but from this suffering comes salvation.

After years of lawsuits, Cricket Hollow was finally shut down, giving its animal inmates a chance for new lives.

Working with the Animal Legal Defense Fund (ALDF), Born Free USA rescued two rhesus macaques and three baboons from Cricket Hollow. The monkeys are now at our primate sanctuary, receiving the comfort and care that they had been denied for so long. You can help the monkeys by making a donation through the website!
