It is also a simple thruth that if you teach people properly, they are less likely to use violence and harm other beings, human or animal. Crime statistics for India indicate that the Jains have the lowest level of violent crime of any group. It is virtually non-existent in this community. They have an almost 100% compliance with a vegetarian diet. They are not better than any one else, but have been properly taught...
When teachings are ambivalent and allow for exceptions which explain why there is harm to other beings, then it is much easier to twist these teachings. That is why there is so much confusion in the Judeo-Christian community about compassion for animals....
