Not everyone in – or from – India is a Mahatma Gandhi or a Maneka when it comes to the treatment of animals.
I worked for an Indian embassy in Europe and watched how the diplomats’ children often persecuted animals, even kittens, and had them drown in the garden pond for ‘fun’. By and large there isn’t the slightest respect for animal life.
This business about elephants in temples too is controversial; for Buddhism advocates respect owing to belief in reincarnation, and never encouraged captivity I don’t think...
