"A note of sadness has been struck by the news that the Society of
United Prayer for Animals is likely to be disbanded as no secretary can
be found. It was as Scottish secretary of the society that I started
campaigning in the first place. The committee feel that the society has
probably fulfilled its purpose, but it may be incorporated with another
Christian animal welfare group. Tennnyson said, "More things are wrought
by prayer than this world dreams of," and who can tell just how much the
animal welfare movement of today owes to the Society of United Prayer
for Animals?" "This year saw the printing of Canon Fielder's "Church Times" article, "The Christian and Animal Suffering" as well as the re-printing of the illustrated leaflet under the heading "Calling All Christians and People of Goodwill" with quotes from a wider choice of sources, and with, on the front, the design by Bruno Nascimben depicting the joy and freedom of humans and animals (including domestic animals) and, indeed, the environment as they survey the Radiant Cross. I believe that their hopeful joy is being justified especially among the young - one so often hears of youngsters refusing to eat meat. An article in the Sunday Times magazine in May featured an interview with two young vegetarians which resulted in 1500 requests for literature from the Vegetarian Society as well as 600 copies of "First Steps in Vegetarianism" by Kathy Silk. It is my hope that what has been written in this and former letters will strike a chord in the minds and hearts of church leaders and church-goers, and that they will face up to the fact that "Thou shalt not kill" means just what it says, both humanwise and animalwise, and that obeying it is humane, and, therefore, Godly."
