What does politics have to do with disease? Well, besides the fact
that political shenanigans are disgusting and make me sick,J
the corruption of the Farm Bill promotes illness in the most
vulnerable – school-age children. How? Through the billions of dollars
in subsidies granted by Congress to huge agribusinesses for the
production of meat and dairy products, and the surplus cheese, milk,
pork, and beef that the government purchases for distribution to food
assistance programs, such as school lunches.
Yet recent federal subsidies for fruits and vegetables are a trifling
0.37%. Compare that to the 73.80% handed over to the huge, powerful,
wealthy meat and dairy industries. We’re not talking about small farmers
here!
Is it any wonder that there is an epidemic of obesity among children?
And we all know what’s in store for these children who learn to eat this
artery clogging stuff early in life – type 2 diabetes, heart disease,
and some forms of cancer.
It’s time to demand that politicians stop their money-grubbing ways
and show some true concern for the people they’re supposed to represent.
