This year Veterans Day will be observed tomorrow – Monday, November
12th – because today is Sunday, a non-workday.
I wonder how many pastors who consider themselves followers of Christ
will quote Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5) today. After all, it
was Jesus who said, “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be
called sons [children] of God.” (Matthew 5:9) Also in Matthew (24:10-11)
Jesus says, “And at that time many will fall away and will deliver up
one another and hate one another. And many false prophets will arise,
and will mislead many.” Obviously, war-promoters are not blessed and
would probably fall into the same category as false prophets.
As we honor those who have sacrificed for our freedom, we should
never forget the pain and suffering that war brings. War is wasteful in
terms of lives, the earth, and money. Perhaps one day all the
inhabitants of this small planet will realize that in the end, no one
really wins a war – everyone loses, more or less. As the following
quotation by an unknown author says, “There’s no honorable way to kill,
no gentle way to destroy. There is nothing good in war, except its
ending.”
