From All-Creatures.orgForm frozen in a past
three hundred million years old,
and yet as modern as
this flaming square of sunlight
bursting from behind a cloud
and startling her into flight.
Now she’s etched in gold pooled light
darting toward some prey,
and in her blue green eyes
reflects the ancient relentlessness
with which she’s devoured time.
She soars aloft with captured gnat
eluding arrows of sun,
form outlined against the crest
of an earth turning, turning.
