For PK...The Last Gift
Adapted by Ava Park
(founder Orange County People for Animals (OCPA)
Now that I am frail and weak
and ready to go into a peaceful sleep
Now you must do what I so need,
Your last gift …. Yes, I am freed!
You are sad, I understand,
But don't let grief stay your hand,
For on this day, more than the rest,
Your love and friendship
must stand the test.
We have had so many happy years,
What is to come holds no fears
You do not want me to suffer … so ….
The time has come …. please help me go.
Hold me firm and speak to me
Until these eyes no longer see.
My body now just an old shell
But I’ll live on …. my spirit is well!
You have been my only friend
So now … stay with me ‘til the end
Although my tail its last has waved,
From pain and suffering I have been saved.
I am so glad that it is you
who has to decide this thing to do.
We've been so close--we two—
these many years,
Yes, cry today, then let go of tears …
I wait for you at the bridge called “Rainbow”
You’ll come soon enough… this I know.
When I see you, my joyful gaze will lift
Until then … thank you for this great gift.
PK, the night before she died...
