20 former Malian dog meat traders are celebrating the arrival of
life-changing farming equipment, making it possible for them to grow plants
for a living instead. A ceremony chaired by the Sébougou mayor and attended
by local village chiefs marked the momentous transition.
With funding from LFT, local partner ARAF-Plateau Dogon gifted the land and
supplies locals need to grow crops, like tubers, vegetables and small fruit
trees. These former dog meat traders will begin a new, cruelty-free way of
life.
The local community will greatly benefit from these resources. And the new
farmers are becoming ambassadors for the dogs, speaking out against the
brutal Malian dog meat trade.
This effort is part of a larger initiative between LFT and ARAF-Dogon Plateau to end the dog meat trade in the Ségou region of Mali and promote the humane treatment of all animals.
LFT is fighting to end dog meat for good, and we're excited to create real, long-lasting change at the local level in Mali.
