Depression is an illness and one of the drastic effects is that it robs one of the ability to think rationally, which is where the "solution to a problem comes from", rational thought.
If one has never suffered with clinical depression or helped someone through it, it is difficult to understand the depth of sorrow, hopelessness, inability to think, and real pain that the person is suffering.
We need to offer constant support, loving arms and shoulders, as well as willingness to talk about the depression to anyone who is suffering. Depression is an illness not a blue mood. It needs medical help, whether counseling, medication, or both, and loving, ongoing, active support.
