Here is the response from my friend about your thoughts on John the Baptist:

Susan,
A most interesting and significant "tidbit!" It is another example of how John the Baptist rejected the whole temple theology and its system of sacrifice.
Scholars point out that there is no indication that he ever entered the temple or any other part of Jerusalem and they feel this was his way of protesting against the corruption of the temple priests that he witnessed firsthand as the son of a priest (even his mother Elisabeth was of the line of Aaron).
He was also protesting against the political and moral corruption of the wealthier Israelites of his day. It is entirely logical that he would extend his protest against the inhumane treatment of animals.
