Dear Elaine:
There is also a second aspect to selling everything and giving to the poor, and we will add, to the ministry of God’s work, and that is to do as Paul did.
If we give everything away without thought to not being a burden on anyone else, we become part of the poor who need help from others, but if we do it in a responsible manner, then we need to earn enough money to take care of ourselves as well as doing everything we can in the ministry of God’s work, which is exactly what Paul did, and what you and your husband are doing. And we would consider your pigs to be both among the poor and a part of your ministry.
To answer your questions about the Methodist church: There has been a little improvement in their attitude toward animals, but not even as much as Wesley talked about. From everything we have seen today, the hierarchy is still uninterested in anything having to do with true compassion for animals, and even for the people who care about them. It still remains basically a grass roots effort.
