I think you are referring to what many call atonement theology, in which
Jesus is regarded as the perfect sacrifice that atones humanity for its
inherited sinfulness, which itself relates back to Adam's sin. This theology
is quite popular among contemporary Christians. Although there are some
passages in the Gospels that lend support for this theology, many who
believe in atonement theology derive much of their support from Paul's
writing. St. Augustine played a crucial role in the development of atonement
theology as it is understood today, as did Anselm in the 11th century.
I discuss this theology, some problems with it, and an alternative theology
in Chapter 12 of my book Guided by the Faith of Christ.
