As a systems engineer and a member of the first generation to largely admit
that humans are heating the climate of the planet, I feel a tremendous sense
of responsibility for reversing this heating and maintaining the climate in
a stable state. Any project involving a large number of people trying to
achieve a common, measurable objective is, by definition, an engineering
project. Any engineering project requires solid systems engineering to
inform its proposed implementation steps so that we can monitor our progress
towards meeting objectives.
Physics tells us that every molecule we put into the atmosphere either heats
the climate or cools the climate based on its absorption spectrum. Humans
have been putting a whole lot of molecules into the atmosphere every year,
including about 40 trillion kilograms of carbon dioxide, mainly from fossil
fuel burning (the Burning Machine) and 400 billion kilograms of methane,
mainly from animal agriculture (the Killing Machine). These are the main
molecular catalysts that modulate the increase or decrease in the water
vapor in the atmosphere, which is the primary greenhouse gas that heats the
climate.
As such, Climate Healing is the largest and greatest engineering project in
the history of humanity. While the Apollo mission involved one million
engineers at its peak in the 1960s, Climate Healing involves 8 billion
engineers today and growing. As an inhabitant of planet earth, you are a
team member on this project whether you like it or not, since your daily
actions and the choices you make impact the earth’s climate positively or
negatively.
The Climate Bathtub problem is a simple systems engineering analogy that
shows how the Killing Machine and the Burning Machine that our global
industrial civilization has unleashed are causing the earth’s climate to
heat up at the moment. In the problem, you are asked to save the baby and
drain the bathtub without overflowing the Vegan reforestation underground
water tank. Any solution to this problem would show that we need to shut
down the Killing machine as quickly as possible if we wish to save the baby
in the bathtub and thereby leave a thriving planet for our children and
grandchildren.
How lucky are we that we get to engineer such a profound transformation and
see it through to completion? I’m truly grateful to be alive and kicking at
this critical juncture in human history on this planet.
I trust you are as well. Let’s make this greatest transformation in human
history happen sooner rather than later.
Eat plants.
Plant trees.
Love animals.
Heal the planet.
It’s that simple.
