DO UNTO FISH

I flip flop gasping for breath,
with those around me doing the same.
Why doesn’t my plight hurt your heart as much
as when someone goes out to shoot “game?”

When a baby deer’s mom is shot and killed,
your eyes want to turn away.
But when a fish gets caught, struggles then dies,
in fishing that’s called a “Great Day!”

You cut me with your deboning knife.
I didn’t deserve to die.
What gives you the right to end my life?
Have you stopped and just thought to ask why?

You think I’m so insignificant.
You say, “But it’s only a fish.”
I hope you see the connection one day
between me and the death on your dish.

It’s seeing connections that will turn your heart
to the person you want to be —
a compassionate soul with respect for all life.
Won’t you start by respecting me?
