Twinkle of stars

Eyes raised,
twinkle of stars,
heavenwards.

Choral distanced voices,
humankind on the wind.

But in this space,
only heartbeat, grunt,
breath against
the bite of frost.

Eyes ablaze,
herd.
Snort and shuffle,
Singular unseen quietude.

Where is our connection to you?
As voices cry out.
Where is our compassion?
As you suffer at the end.
What will become of us?
As we place death on the table.

Twinkle of stars.
I raise my eyes up,
watching,
cold faced,
wind that wakes me,
from the long sleep
of the ignorant.

To a world where I stand
for your fielded
freedom.

In winter’s wake.
In all seasons.
For all time.
