A Prayer at the Sacred Threshold
By T.S. “Tams” Nicholson

Creator God,

We gather in Your presence at this sacred threshold,
surrounding Your beloved [name] with our tenderness and love.

[Part 1 – Gratitude]

You formed his/her/their precious being with wisdom.
You breathed life into this beautiful soul,
and his/her/their every breath, every heartbeat, every moment has belonged to You.

Thank You for the gift of [name]—
for the friendship,
for the trust,
for the joy he/she/they brought into [steward]’s home,
and for the love that is shared between [name] and [steward].

Thank You for every ordinary and holy moment together:
for rubs and gentle touches,
for playfulness and each of his/her/their [meows, purrs, barks, or appropriate sound]
for eyes that speak without words,
for familiar footsteps,
for comfortable resting places, and so much more.

We also thank You, Lord, for the beautiful silent communion known between your creatures and You. Not one sparrow is forgotten by You or falls outside Your care (Luke 12:6, Matthew 10:29), and we rest assured in this knowledge that this beloved one is held within Your infinite tenderness now and always.

[Part 2 – Our Beloved Creature]

Dear [name], you are so dearly loved.

You are cherished.
Your life matters.
You have brought gifts that words cannot fully express.
Thank you for your love, trust, attention, and time.

We pray you take comfort in knowing that you do not leave this life alone.
[Steward] is here beside you.
The Creator who formed every inch of you and delighted in your first breath is here.
May you feel only love surrounding you.
May you rest now.
May you release your tired body.
May you go gently into the loving care of the One who created you.

[Part 3 – Christ Shepherds Our Beloved]

Merciful Christ,
You entered this world among the animals - born surrounded by their loving gaze, and later spending 40 days in the wilderness with the wild creatures as angels ministered to You (Mark 1:13). You speak of sparrows, sheep, birds, and every vulnerable life with tenderness. Please draw near now to [name] to shepherd this precious soul through the mystery before us and take him/her/them to heaven with Your Father where there is no fear, no suffering, no cruelty, and exists only complete unity and love.

[Part 4 – Holy Spirit Comforting the Steward]

Holy Spirit, Comforter,
remain with [steward] in the grief of this parting.

Bring comfort where there is anguish.
Bring peace where there is uncertainty.
Bring rest and protection to this broken heart.

For we know that grief is the sacred cost of love,
and that such sorrow bears witness to a bond that was real, beautiful, and blessed.
And aid [steward] in releasing any guilt or doubt that tries to manifest during this time of grief.
[* If euthanasia add:]
Place the balm of Your love on [steward]’s heart with the realization that choosing mercy at the end of suffering can be a final act of love.

[Part 5 – Final Step - Entrusting Our Beloved to the Creator]

Creator of all life,
we now entrust [name] to You.

May these loving arms and our presence be the last earthly shelter [name] knows.
And may our familiar loving voices be the last earthly sounds heard as You carry him/her/them from the echoes of this earth to the fullness of heaven, rejoicing at [name]’s arrival.

Amen.
