Hardly a day goes by when we don’t hear news about some disease that
has its origin in animal use (abuse is more accurate).
If it isn’t about Japan’s distrust of American beef for fear of Mad
Cow Disease, it’s about the spread of Avian Flue from infected poultry
in crowded conditions, or a man infected with Anthrax from animal hides
from Africa. These are the highly publicized diseases that appear to
have infected relatively few people around the globe, thus far.
But what about the millions of people made ill with everyday, run of
the mill “stomach flu,” the euphemism for food poisoning that has its
origin in contamination from animal products? How about the chronic
illnesses and discomforts caused by dairy products: allergies,
children’s earaches, lactose intolerance, Crohn’s disease, to name just
a few. And what about the common cold that most people just accept as
inevitable? I could go on and on.
These common diseases amount to an epidemic linked directly or
indirectly to people’s eating habits. Simply switching to a vegan diet
could eliminate much suffering. It worked for Frank and me. Many years
ago we switched to eating a mostly unprocessed diet of whole grains,
vegetables, legumes, and fruits. And it is one of the best things we
have ever done. For one thing, our immune system is so strong that we
haven’t had colds, sore throats, or the flue since then.
I’m amazed that so few physicians know the truth about this, or are
brave enough to admit it. However, we have found a few medical doctors
who do give good, solid advice. Hopefully, more will join their ranks.
