On Waking
By John Cannon

May I awaken
with a smile,
not a frown.

May I feel the muscles
of my face and body
relax with softness,

not tighten
with anxiety.

May my first thoughts
by positive,

expectations
of happiness,

not fears
of difficulties.

May I look
at every one
and every thing,

every living being
and every feature
of this magnificent planet,

as ephemeral miracles
with whom I am
inextricably linked,

interconnected
in every precious
moment of my life.

May I go forth
through the day,

with thoughts
and words
and deeds

of lovingkindness.
